And? People did and some still do want it. Just not enough to combat Blackberry’s poor decision making.

let’s look at all your statements:
Google plus is the way of the future
Gtalk is the way of the future
Mr Google and I are going to make beautiful children
Hangouts is the way of the future

Signal is the way of the future. I gave google messaging more than enough time to sort their shit out. It's like they actively tried to kill messaging.

Also, I never used Google+ .. only thing I ever said about Google+ is that it was a way better application than Facebook.. which it was.

I only use Signal for one person...Steve...but I do get it, and I like it. But I am not taking on the mission of getting all my friends and family to convert from Facebook Messenger or SMS

I'll happily put in effort to get people away from Facebook. That company is pure evil.

lol. I had a blackberry z10 when they put out their first decent touch screen phone out. it was too little too late.

The best headline in the Metro paper history had to be the "bedford to lose 350 RIM jobs"

Blackberry fucked themselves over by lounging in their success and not putting out touch screen phones while others innovated. They literally sat on their hands confident they had the business market cornered and didn't need to invest in touch screens and failed to realize people NOT in the business market were beginning to drive the sales.

BBM held a lot of people in their grip. When they launched cross platform they had an opportunity to turn it into a product to bring more people back but instead of innovating they tried to monetize it and instead it drove people away. It was the iMessage of the 2000’s and they fucked it up.
The Z10 was also another opportunity that they pooched. The kept trying to tell people what they wanted instead of just listening to what their customers were saying they wanted. The Z10 keyboard was and remains one of the best keyboard that has ever existed…and yet much like Boots endorsing a chat app, it got destroyed.

BBM sucked. It was platform dependent and when they tried to open it up it was a pile of trash.

Go back a bit farther, BootsBoots . I’m sure if I do an RC search, I can find you going on and on about the benefits both of blackberry as a device and BBM as the messaging platform of the future. You were *all in*. Maybe as you got your Google tattoo, you started beating a different drum but you can’t act like you weren’t a full on BlackBerry fan boi!

I think you're confusing me for someone else. I was an Android fanboy since the Nexus One and made fun of Blackberry crew as much as possible.

iMessage is also platform dependant and has become the new BBM holding people in. When BBM was first opened, apart from glitches it functioned beautifully. It wasn’t until they got cocky and greedy and tried to pull out every dollar they could that it went to shit. I had BBM on my nexus before pretty much anyone in North America outside of BB’s offices and save for some bugs it was great.

Boots your evaluation process is busted. If Google+ was better than Facebook, Facebook would be dead. If BBM was such a rotting pile of shit, it never would have had the demand it did to go cross platform and blackberry would have tanked years earlier. Maybe from your seat as a software guy Facebook and BBM sucked but from a customer perspective they were/are historic.

iMessage/BBM are one and of the same. Just meant to trap you. G+ software was better than Facebook but you're not gonna dethrone Facebook with that alone. It was already too entrenched.

Of course it’s meant to entrap you but if it wasn’t good, it wouldn’t work. That’s not ground breaking news.

Google Wave was shit. At least their messaging attempts were good. That's the bizarre part. They had a string of good messaging apps and one by one they canned them. If they had of just stuck with Gtalk they'd be #1 right now in the messaging space. Someone needs to do a documentary on the failure of Google in messaging. It'd be interesting to see their thought process or lack thereof.

Gtalk didn’t stand a chance. iMessage is so ingrained with iPhone users that they didn’t have any reason to move away from it, especially to their arch nemesis; Google. They had their heels dug in and if you wanted to talk to them you could text them. Even today most iPhone uses primary chat app is iMessage with WhatsApp as a secondary for cross platform group chats. Gtalk required a gmail address which not all of them had. WhatsApp just required a phone number which everyone had. Adoption was that much easier. I would hazard that the only people using WhatsApp as their main IM platform are Android users.

Yeah but with gTalk Google had a massive userbase that they could have carried forward and built on. Instead they kept throwing it all away and starting over each time. They had a chance to salvage things with RCS but they blew that too with their terrible rollout. Letting the carriers roll it out was a huge mistake.

Anyways, not going to change my mind that Signal is not the best messaging platform currently available. We give enough of our data willingly over to the big tech companies so keeping messaging private is a small win.

No doubt that signal is good from a privacy part, but the fact remains it takes two people to have a chat and if you are the only one using it, however good it is, it’s still useless.

Think back further. When you had a Blackberry, anyone else who used something else was an idiot in your opinion.

People use WhatsApp and iMessage. Is there something better? Sure, signal does everything both do and is secure. If I install it today will I question where it has been all my life and start chatting on that? No, simply because as good as it has the potential to be, there conversation would be severely limited with nobody on the other end to reply.

Beta was better than VHS, and Sega was better than Nintendo but when your friends came over with the Gobots on VHS and Mario Bros, the party sucked.

Exactly remember this conversation - as an early iPhone user watching you use your already antique BlackBerry with pride, not even realizing how far behind you already were.
