    Police bust counterfeit ID operation

Halifax man faces 108 fraud-related charges

    By STEVE BRUCE Court Reporter

A Halifax man faces 108 charges of fraud, forgery and identity theft after police seized a number of counterfeit ID cards bearing other people's names and the equipment needed to produce them.

Jonathan David DeYoung, 26, was arrested Friday night, when members of the Halifax Regional Police-RCMP integrated financial crime unit searched his apartment at 2677 Gladstone St.

Inside the residence, officers allegedly found numerous fake pieces of identification such as Ontario driver's licences, Ontario health cards and social insurance cards.

Police also seized computers, scanning equipment, a thermal printer, an ultraviolet light, blank ID cards and Ontario government holograms.

    <snip>

The 108 charges against DeYoung include making false documents, affixing a counterfeit mark to documents, possession of identity information for a fraudulent purpose, fraudulently impersonating someone else with intent to gain advantages, possession of a machine or instrument intended to be used in forging a trade-mark and possessing a counterfeit mark for a document. The offences are alleged to have committed between May 1 and Oct. 22.

According to court documents, DeYoung allegedly produced bogus ID cards containing the identity information of at least 11 people from Ontario.

“We've recovered a number of identities we believe have been compromised,” Drover told reporters. “There's additional evidence that we've recovered that suggests there are actually several more. So we are in the process of notifying those people.”

    <snip>

Crown attorney Catherine Cogswell said another 50 to 100 criminal counts could be laid against him by then, and that another person could be charged as well.

Judge Michael Sherar ordered DeYoung to return to court Thursday. In the meantime, he'll be held at the Dartmouth jail.

DeYoung, a 2006 graduate of St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, operates a Halifax company called High Impact Promotions. The company has run an event called the World's Largest Pub Crawl in the city since 2007.

While studying at St. F.X., he started up a website that allowed university students across the country to sell used textbooks to one another.

DeYoung hammed it up for the cameras as he was escorted into court Monday.

“Just a little vacation,” he said of his legal difficulties.

“The World's Largest Pub Crawl 2011 will be bomb.”

It sucks for the people whose identities have been compromised.

I'm sure this is really what you meant.

Not really the attitude you want to portray going into court when you have 108 charges against you.

Wow, bad karma came around to kick this guy in the ass!!! This is the idiot that promoted his "worlds largest pub crawl" by promising to donate $10k to charity (he never did, claiming the charity he wanted to donate to wouldn't accept his donation) and "plant a tree" for every participant (he planted them on his friends xmas tree farm lol). The whole thing was a scam, he never bothered to contact Guinness World Records about it and many bars didn't even know a pub crawl was coming the night of the event even though he claimed VIP access to every location. He illegally harvested emails from several maritime universities to spam the event, and he also ripped off a bunch of people via the Internet by posting laptops for sale and never shipping them once he got their money.

It amazes me that people are able to find identity theft and fraud amusing.

Pub crawl organizer faces more charges

Man now accused of 164 counts of fraud-related crimes

    By STEVE BRUCE Court Reporter

Police have filed 56 additional fraud-related charges against a Halifax man arrested a week ago.

Jonathan David DeYoung, 26, now faces a total of 164 counts of fraud, forgery and identity theft.

And even more charges are expected as the investigation continues, Crown attorney Catherine Cogswell said after DeYoung made his second appearance in Halifax provincial court Thursday.

At the request of defence lawyer Mike Taylor, Judge Michael Sherar remanded DeYoung to the East Coast Forensic Hospital in Dartmouth for a seven-day psychiatric assessment.

The defence wants a medical opinion on whether DeYoung should be declared not criminally responsible for his alleged actions because of a mental disorder.

DeYoung will be back in court Nov. 4.

The head of a company called High Impact Promotions, which runs an annual event in Halifax called the World’s Largest Pub Crawl, DeYoung was arrested Oct. 22, when police searched his Gladstone Street apartment.

Inside the residence, officers allegedly found equipment that was being used to make high-quality government ID cards such as Ontario driver’s licences, Ontario health cards and social insurance cards.

The seized items were displayed for the media Monday, when police announced the laying of 108 charges against DeYoung.

At that point, DeYoung stood accused of producing bogus ID cards in the names of at least 11 real people from Ontario.

The revised charges filed Thursday allege that he also stole the identity information of 18 people from one end of Nova Scotia to the other.

According to the new court documents, DeYoung is accused of fraudulently obtaining money from three payday loan companies in the Halifax area.

Police claim he used some of the fake ID cards and forged records of employment and bank documents to get loans of $1,500 and $1,200 from Cashmoney; $1,195, $1,000 and $995 from Money Mart; and $1,000 from the Cash Store.

He also tried to get a loan from Cash 4 Less, police allege.

DeYoung graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish in 2006. While studying at St. F.X., he started up a website that allowed students across the country to sell used textbooks to one another.

Not criminally responsible because of a mental disorder? Really? I guess it is his only hope at this point. Here is to hoping the judge is hard on him.

    From his FB wall:

Jonathan DeYoung Phd It's a beauty now that my lawyer pulled strings to get me transferred to the Physch ward from the high-profile range in P.C. Now I got a gym, a pay-phone that receives calls, that can call cell phones and is unmonitored. All I have to do is drool on myself and constantly recite the alphabet when I walk around in circles. Call me 902-468-9606 I'm bored out of my fucking tree 'till bail.*This was posted by a agent*

If this was the states, he would be getting plowed by 10 black guys for the rest of his life, sadly in Canada it will probably be 2 months of community service.
