I have a 1.5 hour phone interview with the University of Guelph at 2 pm! I applied and made the shortlist for the Masters in Industrial Organizational Psychology Program. I need some good questions to ask them, so far I have: -how much lab space is available for Graduate students, how many people per lab, how many computers etc. -How many graduate students are in the department, how many are supervised by one person. - If I recieve a SSHRC grant (which I've been nominated for) how much will the University top it up? - I'm aware it is a PhD track program - if I decide that a Masters is the best option for me, is it still easy to depart after 2 years with my Masters? - How much work can I expect to have available to me as a TA or RA? Are their opportunities to work ith the affiliated consulting company? - Does the school assist in internship finding, or are students expected to find their internships themselves? hmmmm thats what I have for now
I'm aware it is a PhD track program - if I decide that a Masters is the best option for me, is it still easy to depart after 2 years with my Masters? Don't think I would ask that one. To me it says, "I'm not sure I want to do this."
Good point. Maybe I'll rephrase: Is the program modularized? Do you do a seperate 2 year Masters then a 3 year PhD; or is it all combined such that one could be working on their Masters Thesis and PhD dissertation simultaneously? Maybe that will coax the answer I want out of them.
Much better. If you don't get the answer you want, you can just wait for your offer and ask at that time.
It is the psychology of work in its entirety: Recruitment, Selection, Organizational structure, Training and Development, Occupational Health & Safety and Human Factors.
The vast majority of I/O graduates work as consultants to organizations, to advise them on anything related to the field. They develop and implement selection systems, recruitment campaigns, and training and development packages for employees. Some larger companies have their own I/O specialists on staff to do all of the above. There is also a great deal who remain career academics and researchers to investigate things like organizational commitment, the effects of leadership style and team work-group organization. Then there are also many people who branch off and specialize highly in a sub-field, such as human-machine interfacing. also, yes - I am a huge dork.
Congrats! Glad to hear you felt it went well. The next three weeks are going to seem so far away! Fingers crossed for you.
I'll probably have some tough decisions about where I want to go in front of me - Guelph isn't the only school I applied to after all. We shall see.
