One day everything worked fine....next day I looged on, I had no startup sounds, mail sounds, nothing.
Everything else, sound-related works fine. Games and music all sound great.
My email sound is my PC Speaker making one solitary 'beeep'.

    WTF happened?!!!?!?!?!?!?!

Go to the start menu and choose run.Type in dxdiag and enter. Check under the music tab to see if everything is working there.I had the same problem and it turns out that a quick update to DX9c solved it.

    Everything works fine there.
The only sounds that won't work, no matter what I change, are my event notifications. Even in the menu where you can pick your notifications, I can make them play there, but when something happens that would NORMALLY cause a sound, nothing happens, except for my pc speaker going 'beep'.
