Wife is going to the Philippines for a 2 week medical mission and we'd like to stay in touch with each other. She has an iPhone 5s, I have android. We thought about putting a package on her phone but $150 for 50 min and 50 texts is a bit extreme. Would put google duo on our phones but you need data for it as it uses your cell #. Skype is terribly fussy I find. Facebook messenger had a video chat that works ok, quality isn't great though.

    Suggestions?

Google Duo should do the trick. It's special built to perform well on crappy networks.

    Haven't heard of Google duo.

I've used Whatsapp and FB messenger for video calls while away without issue.

only uses cell # to confirm contacts though. Once you dl it, it should work off wifi only I would think

Google duo great for wifi. I do find it somewhat choppy and the sound is pretty crappy tho. Not really a lot of options out there as clear as FaceTime.

I use hangouts when I'm in the US to talk to my wife and boy. Works fine even with hotel WiFi

Hangouts worked really good in Hong Kong and Manila for my wife but the hotel Wifi is sketchy in Tuguegarao.
