I have in the past used torrents as most of us have. I still think that this is pointless. Do they really think that people will not find ways to bypass anything that they put into place? If someone really wants to keep getting everything free, they will. There are going to be guides on ''how to''. Lets say you get a letter in the mail threatening a $5,000 fine. What's to stop you from just buying the movie/song/whatever and then arguing that you had the right to that particular piece of intellectual property when you downloaded it?

I have no idea why anyone still uses torrents with all the other ways to do it

I can't remember the last time I've downloaded anything. Just stream it all these days.

After over a year and hundreds of downloads, I finally got an email notice of copyright infringement from Bell/ whoever sent them the complaint. Viacom I think.

Was it for a big new movie? Star wars? A hot TV show season like Game of thrones? What could finally have gotten them to send me a letter?.......

I downloaded a season of Team Umizoomi for my kids!

    LOL.

Not that I give a crap. Still waiting to see the first person sued in Canada for anything

I've gotten 2 or 3 of those notices so far, and they were all for HBO Shows. Entourage and Silicon Valley, I think. I have Sonarr set up to use newsgroups and torrents, and most shows will download from the newsgroups first, but every once in a while it can't find it there and downloads a torrent, and that's what happened with the HBO shows. I've switched to manually downloading those ones through the newsgroups now.

I finally had a letter as well. I think it was Grey's Anatomy or maybe Outlander. Something my wife downloaded in any case.

I told her we can't torrent any longer and she was upset.

Are newsgroups free? What's the new shiznit for getting access to stuff that's not on Hulu or Netflix?

    Why?
It is an empty threat at this moment in time in Canada. The whole point of it is to scare people into not torrenting when in reality they can't do much about it but threaten. And they don't even know who you are. They sent it to Bell, who did not reveal your identity and just forwarded it to you.

if it really bothers, we can just get VPN's

With Eastlink they come as pop ups when you go back on the internet after downloading.

We got one for me downloading "Banshee" last week. Meh.

As was said it seems to be an HBO thing - I have downloaded tons of network shows and never had a problem.

I tried the Kodi thing a little bit and found the quality to be shit.

Is it illegal to record shows? If its not then why can't I download something I could have just recorded off the TV anyways?

Also have had the eastlink popup, ignored it so I don't know what it was for.

recording shows means you've paid to see them in the first place

I pay for cable now and have for the past many many years.

I do understand that if I download a netflix series show that would be a problem since I don't pay for that, but if I had cable throughout the whole time say "the wire" was on. I could have recorded that ages ago and watched it now or I could just download it now. Is that much different?

There is no way to police that though, How do they know you paid for cable when "the wire" was on versus someone that has never had cable and downloads it as well

Fwiw, if you receive an email, don't open it. Delete it. Opening it confirms you received it.

I don't believe that would really help in anyway. Refusing to listen when someone tries to tell you to stop doing something illegal doesn't make it any less illegal.

I'm no lawyer but it seems like it would be beneficial if the copyright holder couldn't prove you've ever received any warnings.

Is there a law that says you need to be notified at least once in writing that you are breaking the law before you can be charged?
