I think it's about time I start using a VPN.. I had always avoided it because 15 years ago I used a VPN and it choked my download speeds down to a trickle.. In light of these recent 'John Doe' letters, I've decided it's stubborn not to explore the idea.. Who are you guys using for VPN services? Are they all the same?

I see Nord advertising on Youtube channels, that's really the only VPN company I'm familiar with, and that doesn't mean they're good, it just means they advertise on the YT channels I'm watching..

What are your download speeds like? I'll get popular torrents now at 5MB/s.. wondering what should I expect to get for speed...

its slower, i havent actually pinged it to nail down a speed. i usually pick an east coast US connection and let it run. i also dont download on my regular laptop. so im fine with setting something up to download on my server and if it takes 2-3x longer then whatever.

If you're willing to risk using Torrents, take the speed hit with a VPN. Torrents are the equivalent of putting a sign on your front lawn that says 'I STEAL MOVIES'

It's not even movies really.. I've got cable, HBO (it'll be GoT, most likely, that'll cause trouble) and a PVR, but I still grab most of my TV from torrents..

It's just HBO for me. Don't have cable and just use Netflix and crave. But I'm not paying $20 extra a month for crave just to get access to HBO. Just downloaded Windscribe.

But after what you said Boots, can they still see youir downloadsdt with a VPN?

They can only see what you’ve downloaded with your ip, Since a vpn changes your ip, they can’t see anything you’ve downloaded. At most they might be able to see you’re using a vpn but they would have to go after them to see your traffic. They’re not going to be able to do that.

Not willing to pay for whatever streaming service you want but willing to pay for a VPN to steal content is pretty stupid, IMO.

The one I downloaded is free? It's limited for data but more than enough for what I want.

Downloading what yourself? Most of those are streaming service so all sitting there already and a PVR takes care of the rest. Maybe you watch too much TV?

I use Nord and it's worth having over a free one and it's not that expensive. More than one computer can use it (can't remember how many, but I have it on two). You can choose what city server you want so if one is slow, you can just switch and experiment. One thing that is good is that if you every lose connection with that server, it stops your internet altogether so that your IP can't see that you are downloading....pictures of flowers and puppy dogs, yeah that's it.... Another neat thing is that if you come across a You Tube video that says the uploader hasn't made it available in your country, you can just switch to an American server.
