On any regular showroom-stock WRX you can see this glow of the turbo/heatshield after a spirited drive.

EGT's baby, EGT's. My WRX's EGTs regularly go up to 700 C just driving around town. A high speed run on the highway can see them as high as 800C. Anything over 900C is usually game over for your exhaust valves and pistons on a standard turbocharged engine. :D

WRC cars have an extra reason for glowing red hot, the anti-lagg system. ALS is there to keep the turbo spooled even when the driver is letting off the gas. The engine management retards the timing so much that the exhaust valve is open when the spark is sent. The unburned fuel in the exhaust manifold explodes, spinning the turbocharger. This can keep the turbo making as much as 28lbs boost, without any throttle!

Burning all that fuel in the manifold makes the EGT's spike as high as 1200C, this is why WRC car's exhausts glow bright red. Also, the unburned fuel exploding in the exhaust is basically a backfire in front of the turbo, this is what makes WRC cars pop, crackle and shoot flames like they do. :)
