Go and read the first post at the top of this thread. It's not that hard to figure out that social media/news reporting and people's perceptions of social media/news media are changing and merging. Meaning people have questions about grammar, spelling issues on various social media platforms.

I'd like to think that your last two posts were intentionally ironic, but I don't think they were.

Lol. Actually the first post was designed to be ironical, not ironic, as you say. There's an old rule about saying: that's comical, or that's comic. Same, same. Ok I'm being nitpicky obviously. The main thing about social media reporting is that expectations from consumers of content in the massive media-infotainment industry are higher than what the workers in the industry can provide.

Eg. When I worked in a small market town, the local Global/Shaw girls did online reporting and the usual on-camera stuff too. Salary? $30K/year. That was about two years ago. It hasn't been much better since then.

And CMikeHunt. The thing with the Chronicle Herald is that their regular unionized newsroom staff is on strike and in a labour dispute and things have been quite ugly over there.

Totally aware of that (I'm actually one of the more pro-labour posters on here) - having said that, a 12-year-old should know what RCMP stands for.

Not only that- being on strike doesn't mean they can't spell check.

Maybe I'm picky-but I try to be super careful about what goes out to my stakeholders when it comes down to my job. Yes, I may be more laid back on my own social media but that's personal. I'll sooner laugh off a spelling mistake on my own social media accounts, than try to explain how it happened in my job.

Ha! I didn't even notice the RCMP mistake - I caught a couple other errors before I even made it that far (dept, highlights should just be highlight, show's should be shows). I know there is a strike going on, but that's just horrible for Nova Scotia's primary newspaper.

Actually, they're not incorrect in two of those. Take out the middle part of it and leave as is.

"The Tattoo's overall theme highlights the show's international flavour."

    It wouldn't make sense as:
"The Tattoo's overall theme highlight the show international flavour."

But yeah, dept /= debt. That's basic stuff.

    • Sponsored posts - you can set a budget for these and usually geographic targeting
    • Make sure your Facebook pictures are no more than 20% text or Facebook gets weird about them - put the text in the posts.
    • Lots of pics of your awesome projects, and stuff that shows personality! Like the pic of your pup with the lumber. :)
    • Contests - running contests where people like/share your page are very very effective - could give away a gift certificate or something toward a reno. The most popular platform seems to be Woobox right now.
    • Try to get your followers engaged - we ask them questions, ask if they prefer a/b/c to try to get them responding

Speaking of contests if you want them shared have a coloring contest for customers' kids with voting based on likes. If you're building decks have the kids draw their house with their new deck. Parents will share the hell out their kid's drawing to all their friends just to get more likes and every time they do its one more person that knows about you.

I agree with you about pro-labour. Given the dispute and the stresses of being in a lockout/strike (the newspaper recruited kids from the local journalism program to staff the paper), there apparently is no editor checking spelling etc. Interestingly enough, the locked out workers/strikers have a better online version of their paper that's up and running! They even scooped the Halifax Chronicle Herald, lol.

I have actually seen numerous, outrageous and egregious mistakes by the now dying Postmedia empire. That's Canada's national daily for conservative views. I should screenshot those because it's amazing how those got past a night editor. And you don't want to know about the fact-checking bomb. A story has its facts "mostly" right but gets one seemingly unimportant detail wrong. Wait for the blow-back on that when the interwebz gets a hold of you.

But on social media promos, you don't always have to just do online. A stunt can migrate online when you do it in the real analog world.

You can do what Emirates did at the LA Dodgers game recently (and I do have issues with how this airline treats its workers btw). But whoever came up with this is brilliant. Now why didn't Westjet do this a long time ago?

Yeah, I agree. Not a Westjet fan but they do have their loyal customers apparently. Recent issues with their personnel though have thrown some doubt about what they do when there's a crisis.

This might not have been the smartest image choice to go with this Tweet:

Ahhh the CBC. Dealt with them in my career. Self righteous. Some sort of journalistic standard if I was to believe them. Took over a Beng Box even though I was the one whose company was paying for the next 15 minutes. As a junior level news producer at a small town "affiliate" the arrogance from their mid-level people would shock you.

But hey, their people made $75K for the same job I used to do for $36K and eventually made just under $60K, and got laid off. Now their people still work with their nice protected jobs. You and I get to pay for that.

Love how they "track" stories from a Toronto studio with a LCD screen behind whoever it is that's doing their usual "tracking" of stories (usually Tarak Fatah's daughter or Michael Serapio - at least he's good).

Last time I ever "tracked" a story I went out and jumped into my vehicle and drove 2K kilometers to FM and back to report on it. They came along a day later and apparently did the same.
