Russel Peters lives and dies by his comedy and uses some amount of intelligence in his humour when calling out stereotypes. Nick84 posting racist memes is just racist. He posts zero other content here, contributes zero to any discussion.
I'm EXTREMELY offended by the meme that is blatantly attacking smart phones and their battery life/durability, remove this immediately. But really though, the title of this thread now describes the conversation in here perfectly. Can we go back to posting funny stuff please, don't you guys have enough arguments splattered all over this fourm, no need to pollute this thread too.
So, you are ok with racial humour to some degree then? I can’t seem to find your line. Which is ok, I’m not trying to change your mind on anything. I just don’t like being called racist and a dork because I can have a laugh at the expense of others.
Dude, I'm not defending bigoted people. But labelling someone as bigoted or a dork because of some lighthearted memes, that pushed the line, rather than crossed it in my opinion, is itself crossing a line, so to speak.
Meh, hes a lurker. Who cares? Want to narrow it down to 12 rather than 13 users arguing about politics and memes?
The funny thing is that you call them lighthearted memes but they're the exact kind of memes you've been warned about that perpetuate and drive certain political views. It's not the obvious "VOTE FOR THE RIGHT" type advertising that does it - it's this subversive BS that spreads like wildfire because it flies under the line or under the radar. Do some reading on the subject - backed by science, proven out through investigations by criminal investigations by places like the CIA/NSA.
I have to admit - I'm not all that familiar with Russel Peters. I don't mind self-deprecating humour which would be racist if it came from someone else - ie: It's funny when Aziz Ansari makes fun of his Indian parents and his up bringing. It wouldn't be funny coming from John Mulaney. In this case, I'll say it again - it's immature and doesn't deserve a place in modern society. Call what I'm saying overkill, I don't give a fuck. Call me woke (I don't think you would, Matt - I'm just saying in general in this thread), I don't give a fuck. I assume most of the people in this thread posting are from Nova Scotia and most still live there - I will say that Nova Scotia is still behind on the world scale in understanding not where the line is for this type of thing but why a line needs to exist. I see it every time I visit and it makes me really sad.
Russell Peters also pokes fun at his Indian parents. But he also tells jokes about white, black, and Asian upbringings. So why would he get a pass, but John Mulaney wouldn’t if it was the same material? Is it a case of everyone but the white man can’t be racist? But just for discussions sake. Check out some of Russell Peters work if you’re into stand up comedy. It’s hilarious and for sure proof that you can have the fun without the hate. Ya may even laugh a little And not that it matters but something tells me Nick said he was Indian at some point. So I don’t think we’re all whiteys here
Russel peters is hilarious. Love the delivery and even though it's sometimes pandering to stereotypes, he does it in such a way it's acceptable to most, and good fun.
It's affecting you whether you choose to acknowledge it or not. I mean, the studies prove it but you can continue on your ignorant way refusing to believe that a meme could influence you in any way.
As I said, I've not watched much, if any, Russel Peters stuff. I'd have to watch some to answer any of your questions above as I don't know the extent to which he comments on non-Indian things. It is a fine line - I listened to Conan's special episode podcast yesterday as they were talking about Norm MacDonald passing away. It was obvious that Andy Richter actually had some issues with Norm but was biting his tongue about saying too much - there are lines for sure and just masking it as "comedy" is not OK.
Yeah, I’m not talking the “I’m not racist I have one tied up in the back yard” type jokes. Those are disgusting and 100% racist and I think only the old white people of that generation ever found them funny. If you ever check him out I’d like to hear your input!
Just because the characters are colored black you're assuming they represent black people? Seems kinda racist! There was probably more white liberals than black people trashing things.
See, if we want to have a discussion about BLM, AntiFa, etc, let's have an adult conversation about it. I lived through some of that movement here in Seattle and can tell you 100% that the news coverage of it got a lot of it very wrong. So my big issue with the stupid memes that Nick84 is posting is as much that they're bigoted as they're based off of misinformation.
You "lived" through it out in your suburban detached upper class neighborhood in Kirkland watching it on the news? Or did you spend some time at CHAZ, and down and do some peaceful protesting? Maybe smash some windows, light some fires, loot some goodies? Got any good stories you can share? Did you meet the "mayor" of CHAZ while you were there?
This message gives me the impression still that you don't want to have a real discussion but are just throwing out some incendiary things to try and get under my skin. I don't live in Kirkland by the way. It doesn't make sense for me to live on that side of Lake Washington when the office I work out of is on the West side of the lake.
Well, this isn't the news I wanted to read today. Halifax's marginalized have lost one of their loudest voices.
