Ya, thats a comon problem... when I worked for Sony I seen acouple of these a week. Not sure if its still the same now that the price has gone down, but when i worked there 1.5 years ago you would pay 100 bucks to get it fixed (no matter what was wrong with it). Again, not sure if this is still the same but call a Sony Store tomorrow and ask them.

it sound's like your laser.... did you try it with a DVD movie? if it still doesn't read, its probally your laser that went out of alignment... just need's a boost... Seen this many of time's just bring it to your local repair shop... it's a simple process to fix... shouldn't take more then a hour to fix it. (BTW save your-self the head ack, and try and find a sony certified repair shop)

the instruction's are the internet are very vague. if you want to do a good job on it, you would need an osiciliscope and a few good tool's. If you want to try it your-self by all mean's give it a shot! just watch out that you don't boost your laser too much!

all you have to do is get inside the ps2. the lazer is almost like a screw just rais it up half a turn, I had to do this on mine so it would read burnt games better.

Is the new game you bought have a purple back? That's a problem I have seen with a friend. Something about them, when it starts to wear out that is the first ones they don't read. The suggestion for her was to replace the lazer, good luck with yours.

if it's the frist ver. you can get the entire process on the net. it's a simple fix and only about an hour's worth of work. (give or take)

You can get it off of gamefaqs or at least a link to it.
