Ok so I have the net connector and hd installed in the ps2.

I downloaded hdloader from the internet and burnt it to cd......however the cd doesn't boot in the ps2....probably because I don't have a mod chip.

Do I have to buy a 'real' hdloader or is there some other way to make this work without a mod chip??

Best bet is to find a friend that has a PS2 with a mod chip and then take your net adapter and harddrive and memory card to their house and set it up from their machine.I am in the process of doing the same thing.
Also, you cannot use the loader disc or any of the software that comes with the "original" PS2 harddrive because it is set up to check the firmware of the drive itself, third party drives won't work.
