So, due to COIVD and WFH, I ended up bringing home a beefy Windows machine - actually, I have one at home already but the kids pretty much dominate it. I've started thinking about getting back into some gaming a bit on it - kind of sparked by somehow remembering Theme Hospital from way back - ended up getting that from gog.com and playing the fuck out of it the other night. I also just saw Epic Games had Civ VI up for free right now and grabbed that.

Anything else PC gaming wise worth looking at - Steam/Gog/Epic seem to be the main places to take a look. I have a new RTX 2080 on the way for this work machine - it should be spec'd out enough otherwise to play most anything out right now.

I have a 2070 and it does the job pretty nicely. A 2080 will work great. You JUST missed a free copy of GTA V on the Epic store - it was their offer before CivVI. Farcry 5 is like 75% off right now. It's REALLY well done

gta v is like $30 now, not free anymore but a hell of a deal still, I play it pretty often

i assume steam and epic games installs can play online together

Ah, shoot - that would have been good to have for free for sure, though I'm not sure how much I would play it with the kids around. "Whatcha doing dad?" "Killing prostitutes and smacking bitches."

Epic has been giving away a game or two a week for a while now, and there is the occasional great title. Can't beat free.

Blizzard has Call of Duty: Modern Warfare for free as well, which is fun.

On Steam these were either recently free or relatively low cost:

I've been playing Catan online with friends - man their servers took a hit when the pandemic started!

I should also say - I've kind of been trying to stay away from Steam - with that "other home computer" my kids are using, they're using Steam games and we only use one account so I'd either lock them our or I'm locked out.

Credit card is definitely not left linked. I could do a separate one - seems like overkill. There are enough games out there, I'm sure!

I like shooters on the PC for sure - have never gotten the control of them on the PS4 (which is where I play NHL & FIFA).

I was going to pick up Half Life cheap on Steam as I've never played it through but then remembered I did try it once on the PS3 and wasn't into it but that may have been just because of the controller.

I've been on iracing quite a bit more than normal. Will likely extend further into the summer. Today would have been our first race day of the summer

I knew how addictive Civ can be but didn’t realize how easily it would suck me back in.

The new RTX 2080 arrived - just installed it. The thing is huge! It's about 4x as large as the Radeon it replaced. Can't wait to give it a spin on something that can take advantage of it - tempted to install the Minecraft Ray Tracing beta to drive my son nuts but not sure I'd be able to stand his constant begging to play with it after he saw it. :P

do you have a freesync/gsync monitor? It's so awesome for gaming when matched up with that card

No. I recently added a Dell U3818DW as my primary monitor - the curved widescreen is perfect for the work I do - I needed to prioritize productivity over the odd game. The card itself is actually for some work stuff primarily that I'm working on with NVIDIA.

This is the setup - monitor on the left is an older LG, probably going away. the wide screen curved monitors are amazing.

I'm getting ready to do a monitor upgrade. I do strictly iracing and have been using an rift vr for the past couple years, but I want to try triples to hopefully ease the eye fatigue, screen door effect, and sharpen up the graphics a bit as well as expand fov. I've got a few options but haven't fully decided yet. First was one of the newer 32:9 49" ultrawides but while they are easier on your system they only really provide about 2/3 of the screen that say a 16:9 triple 27" setup does. So I think I will go with the 27's. I'm still trying to figure out if my gtx1070ti will run three screens in 1440p or if I should just get less expensive 1080p and not have to upgrade my video card. Anybody have any experience running 1440p in 1080? I've read it does not look good and would be better just to stick in the native resolution of the monitors. You can get some really good prices on 1080p monitors with high specs vs 1440

I almost bought the 49" when I got the 38" - for work, it would have been too big but, man, given how smitten I am with the 38", you can't go wrong. I'm not sure if iRacing is a unique experience but I've never been able to be successful with a multiple monitor setup.

Those are kind of junky actually.

This one is more like it. It's built out of 8020 extruded aluminum tube. It's like Lego for adults lol. I have an old playseat right now and I've almost got the steering column and pedal plate worn out.

I want to check out iracing. I played F1 2019 for a bit and liked that a lot. Makes me want a wheel though.

I've been doing Iracing for about 10 yrs and it is very challenging to be fast. It is very different from other racing games, you don't have unlimited grip from your tires and overdrving a corner and bouncing off a wall don't end so well haha.

its a true driving simulator, not and arcade type driving game, even the best console games like forza an Granturismo do not come CLOSE to Iracing for realistic driving

It also has a ranking system and safety ratings. The online matchmaking for skill levels is the best part as it uses your irating to determine which split you race in. Your safety rating determines which cars and series you are allowed to run in. If you suck you stay in rookie or d class until you don't haha.

Giggity. Borderlands 2 + The Pre-Sequel. I already own both, but good times for free if you're interested.
