Besides get a photo with Jean Chrétien giving me a headlock; what should I do while im there/things I shouldn't miss.

I'll be in the city from the 3rd to the 12th, then Halifax for a few days then down to the Southshore for a wedding.

Canadian Military Museum is really good. Ottawa also got a ton of nice pubs/bar/restaurants. Market square is pretty lively most of the nights. Do all the touristy stuff like parliament hill, supreme court, etc.... If you have a car, go to Diefenbaker bunker. I

Calypso is expensive and long lines, not really worth it.

A lot of the museums are free on Thursdays so you could go to a couple on that day.

Market is a good place for food and night life as Duke said.

The Diefenbaker bunker, is about 20min out side of Ottawa in Carp, I hear they just opened up another part of it.

The rideau canal is something else to do, they have boat cruses on it

The War Museum is really well done as others have said.

The Museum of Civilization is more geared towards kids, IMO. I always found it kind of boring.

I know you're into art - the National Art Gallery usually has some good stuff going on.

The tour at the Parliament Buildings is actually kind of cool if you've never done it before - amazing building, and getting up in the Peace Tower has a great view.

Elgin Street and the Market is where most of the night life is happening.

There are a lot of great restaurants in Ottawa - I'm not up to speed on the "latest great spots", but can ask if you're interested. I have a couple of friends in Ottawa who really keep on top of that stuff.

The Rideau Canal, especially the Locks next to the Parliament buildings are cool to check out. If you go to the Dow's Lake end, you can rent canoes etc. and take those into the canal itself if you want. There are river tours on the Ottawa River and the canal as well. I've never done those so no idea if they're worth it.
