grinds more and more often when I downshift into first. Ever since I was stuck bad one day and had to go back and forth about 300 times a minute to try and get out.

    tranny fucked?

Starting to get fucked. Probably syncros wearing or something. If you just let it fall into first rather than pressuring it in, it might not grind as much.

My car is the same way, bad synchro would be the culprit.

Yep, definitely synchro. Will often show more on downshifts than upshifts. Had that problem with one of our race trannies.

It's not going to kill you to drive it (really old transmissions and in some race cars, they didn't have synchros) but it won't get any better. You can also rev-match when downshifting (a small tap of the gas when downshifting) to help match up the gear speeds.

If it drives you too crazy, you'll have to find a new tranny or get yours rebuilt. The synchros are cheap, but taking it apart and reassembling is the pricey part unless you can do it yourself.

Depending on the type of fluid your truck takes, you could try the GM Synchromesh fluid, as it sometimes helps significantly.

Throw some red line tranny fluid in there. It might prolong the inevitable.

don't downshift into first until you are nearly stopped and it shouldn't grind unless the syncros are really shot. throw some thicker oil into it might help a bit but makes shifting sluggish in the cold weather until it warms up a bit.

Its funny, it's very seldom I find myself downshifting into 1st in a vehicle when stopping.

nah, dont do this. Good way to kill the tranny quicker. The thicker oil wont lubricate the tranny when cold an you'll ruin it much quicker.

Throw some of that lucas shit in it.

Its thick, but not as thick as a the heavy gear oil suggested. Plus its an additive and not replacing what you already have for fluid
