I'm not buying her a new one. She's going in to Grade 12 and I want it to last for a few years.

What should I look for ?

How 'old' should I go back ?

Anyone have any leads ? Where I should look ?

I don't want to cheapest option, but I don't want new either.

    ....and go !

    Thanks

I have my MacBook Pro from 2011 and it is still fantastic. It got me through a two year nursing diploma program and then my 4 year nursing degree.
I upgraded the Ram from 2x 2gb to 2x 8gb as I run Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom for my photography and it does these tasks with ease.
I had to replace the charger a couple years back, but besides that I have had no problems with it at all.
Battery Life is still great. I can get about 4hrs of heavy editing/videos or 8ish hours on word/powerpoint.
It is also a beast, have dropped it probably 100 times at this point and besides a few nicks and dents in the metal it has help up to all of my abuse. It is probably the heaviest laptop of its size but its durability more than makes up for it.

I am not selling it but I would buy another one from that era if I was in the market.

Agreed that the older MacBook Pros have great staying power. The only issue is that a certain point, you can't install the newer versions of MacOS because Apple drops support for older hardware with newer OS's - that means that sometimes you can't get the newest version of some software you use as the software drops support for older versions of the OS. In Cracker's example, Adobe pretty much drops support for an old version of OSX every year for their newest release.

CrackerCracker - out of curiosity, do you do video work as well as photo work? Just curious what software you use if you do.

You've stated the issue with all types of hardware.

The question was specifically about a Mac laptop.

For the most recent Macbook Pro I bought I got a "refurb" one directly from Apple in the US. I saved around $500 doing that instead of getting in the Canada.

I have not had the time to venture into the video stuff at this point. But i checked with a friend of mine who is doing wedding videography and he is using and loving DaVinci Resolve.

I'm required by my employer to say bad things about Davinci Resolve (I work for a competitor).
