I've been looking to buy a Canon macro lens recently. I was looking at the EF 100mm f/2.8 USM as well as the EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM. They are both pretty close in price. Any suggestions? This will be my first lens purchase, other than my kit lens. Thanks! Edit: I've also been looking at standard zoom lenses. I'm looking for something in the ~24-100mm range, give or take a dozen or two mms. There are quite a few cheaper ones available (around $300), but which ones are recommended? Sorry for being so unknowledgeable hehe... but I guess that's why I'm here.
Go for the 100, the extra working distance will come in handy - you can bring the item into focus further away from the front element of the lens and still get 1:1 magnification. USM doesn't hurt either.
