We are having a debate at work about the shooting that occurred at JB's bar in Lower Sackville in the early 90's. (90's maybe....) Does anyone remember the details of what happened?

All I can find out is that it happened in September 1991 after J.B.'s changed its name to "Sizzles". It was a double murder-suicide.

One of my old neighbours was a friend of the shooter growing up if I recall correctly. If I am recalling right it was a guy named Billy Buckley that was the shooter. Not too sure of the details surrouonding the whole incident though. I knew them back then but my memory desn't serve me too well about much of the 90's.LOL

From the Toronto Star. Toronto, Ont.: Sep 20, 1991. pg. A.3

LOWER SACKVILLE, N.S. (CP) - Three men died early today in a shooting in a bar near Halifax. RCMP said an argument in the bar ended in the slaughter, which they described as a double murder and suicide. The shootings took place in Sizzlers Cabaret lounge, a popular spot with young people, on the main street of this city about 15 miles from Halifax. Police said a 25-year-old man left the bar just before it closed at 3 a.m. after getting into an argument with two other men, one aged 20, the other 24.

He came back "within moments with a handgun," the RCMP said in a statement, and shot the two people he had been arguing with, then turned the gun on himself. Bar owner Jeff Beaudry said the killer went to his car, got a gun which he hid under his coat and shot the two men as they were leaving the club. He said no one had any warning of the shootings and none of his staff had even noticed the argument that sparked it.

"It is such a tragedy," he said. "We are concerned for the parents of the young fellows."

The gunman and one of the other men died immediately and the third died later at a Halifax hospital.

Police said the names of the men would not be released until next- of-kin were informed of their deaths but said all were from the Lower Sackville area.

    -----------------------------------------------------------
From the Montreal Gazette - September 21, 1991, pg. D.9:

LOWER SACKVILLE, N.S. - Three men died in a shooting early yesterday at a bar near Halifax. RCMP said the men were shot with a .357 magnum revolver after an argument near the 3 a.m. closing time at Sizzler's Cabaret. "One person left and returned within moments with a handgun," the RCMP said in a statement. "This individual shot two people he had been arguing with. He then turned the gun on himself." Police later identified the gunman as Randall Saulnier, 25, of Lower Sackville. The victims were Brian Probert, 20, of nearby Mount Uniacke, N.S., and 24-year-old William Buckley of Lower Sackville.

Thanks Houdini and Jenn. (Nice find in the TO Star. We searched the archives for the Herald and couldn't find anything)

Can't say I ever remember it being called Sizzlers Cabaret lounge. However, I was also only 13 when the shooting occurred.

Funny you should bring up the Coral...this is exactly why I asked this question about JB's. We were discussing Sackvegas bars and someone asked about the shooting that happened.

Here is the list of what we came up with for bars:

    Scotian Parlour
    Corral
    Roxy's
    Keylargos
    Big Leagues
    JB's
Terri's (Formally The Load of Mischief) and in the basement Jacque's Cocktail Lounge (Formally Club 2000)

    What are we missing?

It's funny - I was just on another work computer looking on the net for the old clip of when the story of the shooting was on NBC news. I'll never get over Tom Brokaw saying the name of my bar in his Tom Borkawy voice. While searching, this thread came up, so I thought I'd stop by.

I got lots of details!! :)

Oh...and The Roxy was our bar too.

My uncle opened/owned it when it was "JB's Country Palace" and he eventually changed over to a dance/rock bar and it became "JB's Show Palace". We were a cabaret, so we had to have live bands.

I started DJing there when I was still in high school (I was 17 when I started). My family bought the bar when I was 18 and a while after we changed the format to a more "Montreal-style dance club" (lots of techno/trance/house music) and eventually changed the name to "Sizzles".

I was I think 19 or 20 when the shooting happened. I was managing the bar that night, so that is probably why my statement was in the papers.

JB's was located at the back of the Nothin' Fancy furniture store (my uncle's furniture store). If you look at Nothin' Fancy now, the bar was basically the back half of the building. After we closed the bar, it became a warehouse for the furniture store. It was slightly smaller than the Palace (which is also a cabaret).

The Roxy was in two of the old movie theaters in Downsview mall.

    Randy Saulnier

I used to hand around with Randy and a fellow whose name I think was John Devinny (not sure of the spelling). Randy was always a bit high strung, to say the least.

He and I split ways just before I joined the PPCLI. In 1985 two friends of mine were killed (the driver had been drinking at JB's): Danny Weston and Dennis Sutherland. And just before I joined the CF Randy kept getting on my case about some BS about me pining over my two friends. He kept ratcheting it up until I punched him out. I think I scared John pretty bad too..totally lost it.

Then, I was in Iraq in 1991. When I came home from the tour my (then) wife told me the story. I don't know if it was 7 months of being in and around the Iraq conflict that desensitized me to this, but I wasn't the least bit surprised.

Probert I didn't know (but didn't he have an older brother?), and Buckley I knew as an acquaintance and only in passing. Totally senseless. I feel sorry for his father. His wife, Randy's mother had passed away about a year or so before, I believe. The daughter, Randy's younger sister, must have needed some serious therapy!

Anyway, thanks for posting the link to the story.

If you happen to have a link to the story around Danny and Dennis please post it as well. I just pretty much up and left NS after that...haven't really been back since...

    Cheers.

No. Brian Probert was NOT the shooter. He was a victim that night. He was a great kid - wrong place and wrong time. He was 20 at the time he passed.
