After seeing my brother's little printer in action I feel I now too need one (surprised it took me this long honestly)

Anyone have one that they NEEDED to have, used a few times and is collecting dust? or one they outgrew? or maybe one that had something die on it and needs repairs?

I really want one but I feel like every time I look at them I feel like it's too soon to buy one.

For the price you paid for crazy ramps you could have likely 3D printed your own :P

    lol

I mean too soon as in they are still so new that they are priced high and every company seems to be doing their own thing. Feel like after a few more years the cost will come down and the kinks worked out

You can literally buy every component and build one yourself if you want. The one my brother has you can 3D print parts to build yourself a bigger printer using the one you buy. There is a TON of stuff out there being done with them. While I don't doubt price will come down some there is already a ton of support out there for them (from what I can gather in talking to a few people who use them).

Seems like it would be a good thing to cost share with a couple friends.

I thought about doing this with my brother but I live in the middle of the woods and he lives in the city out of my way on the way home. Him being a pilot would leave me with access to it for days but it's just a pain in the ass; thus this post.

One of the people on my team at work left last year to work full time on his 3D Printing Youtube channel (The 3D Printing Nerd). Definitely, a ton of interest if he could leave a high paying high tech gig to make Youtube videos full time.

3D printing is SLOW... and it's a bit loud, but for the price point it's excellent.

I'm having a few issues I need to learn about/work out; a co-worker of mine has like a half dozen different printers and kind of a side-job working with them so I'll ask him for some pointers.

Hmm... I apparently don't have any other photos of finished stuff.... on top of the pi is a customized cover that houses some other electronics which I'll use for monitoring my air handler (I need to get that installed now; after I make a wall bracket for it)

annnnnnnnnnnnnd a few failed projects so far haha

It's a learning process. On the above ones not much but they warped at the base a bit.

 Let me get things dialed in and working first. MRAMRA and I split on this printer; he too has been designing a couple of things and his prints turned out way better than mine LOL

Yeah, I don't really have anything to print but I'm always thinking. I'm gonna follow you on this one and let you find out the pros and cons so when I buy one, the homework is done lol

A co-worker of mine has like 6 :| He's been using them for years and doesn't try to stay up on them but between him and my brother it sounds like if you get just about any unit that has decent ratings, and run it off a Raspberry Pi, you can make whatever do what you want. Almost everything on them is upgradeable/interchangeable. Starting with a unit that already has some of the "fan favorite" parts is likely the way to go, but even if you want to buy yourself a bunch of parts and build your own there is just TONS AND TONS AND TONS of information/guides out there to help you do it. It's really staggering how much stuff is out there.

yeah I have a coworker who was a founder on some of the first 3d printers on kickstarter. I've been meaning to ask him what he's using lately. I know he's been into them since the start.

Need to tweak one bolt hole, I accidentally make it oval, once round it will be perfect.

Protects my engine case if i crash, it is the first point that will hit the ground, final piece will need to be made of something strong enough to not get crushed, the factory ones feel like hockey pucks. I am thinking carbon fiber infused nylon will be what I use
