My friend Steph just called me from her ambulance placement site for school.

She just had some preggers patient and gave her an IV. She couldn't reach the sharps container so she tossed the sharp on the floor and stepped on it and kept going.

Post call she forgets all about it and goes to write her paperwork. Her preceptor walks in with a bloody glove on his hand and they have this convo:

Him: "was that your sharp forgotten on the floor?"
Her: "oh shit, you didn't stick yourself did you?"
Him: "yes I did. You read her file didn't you? HIV+"

And he storms out of the room and she's balling her eyes out.

He comes back 5 minutes later and says "now, I was joking but at least you'll never forget another sharp!"

So harsh. Yet hilarious and *I'll* definitely remember it for a long time!

    sharp = needle?

and holy crap I don't know what I'd do if that happened to me and it was real. I'd be so devastated.

That's not harsh at all. It's life or death, not only for herself but also her colleagues. Hopefully she learned a valuable lesson.

I heard that the HIV doesnt live for very long on sharps and things. You'd have to get 'stuck' pretty quickly after it being used on her in order to transmit hiv, no?

    Its a long story.

I had an all-out breakdown a week or so ago... prior to the breakdown I thought my stress was associated with wasted time (hence my ban). It turns out it was associated with the exhaustion and subsequent inability to get anything done caused by hearing about sexual abuse every other day from the women I interview. Once I clued in, I spoke to my supervisors and they completely understood, so I've eased off my thesis writing until my data collection is done, and I'm periodically seeing a counsellor to unload the shit that I hear all the time. :happysad:

Yeah its not easy, thats for sure. I never expected sexual assault and sexual abuse to be so rampant in this population. I would have never entered into a situation knowingly where I would be exposing myself to these stories everyday - because its a topic that really significantly affects me. But it is what it is, and I'm learning to manage... part of it is dealing with all the other stress in my life, though -- if I'm overwhelmed, my brain shuts down and then my interviews are useless and I dont build the rapport I need...

Oh limits, why must we have them...

One trick I learned that I'm sure your counsellors have already mentioned too is to keep a journal. Just write everything down. Not necessarily to be used again but to get it out of your system.

I've been told that oral sex is a relatively hard way to transmit hiv.

Yeah, it's what you do if you can't reach the container.

"SHARP ON THE FLOOR", followed by your steel toed boot on top of the sharp, holding it in one spot until you can pick it up.

    Truth.

Plus, I believe if post exposure you grab em in time, there are drugs to prevent the transmission.

They have drugs to prevent an infected mother from giving it to her baby, and they have drugs that if your s/o is infected, they can immunize you from getting it from them.

We had sharps in Lousiana that once you take the needle out of the vein, it slides into the cap and locks in place. You can't poke yourself on it, and you cannot pull it out of the cap again, its locked permanently. Nevertheless its a sharp, contaminated and goes in the container.

I left one on a pt's stomach once  My bad.

It is a harsh lesson, but a good way to learn it. Hilarious since it didn't happen to be, but I'd be pissy at first if it was lol
