I’ve been using a custom domain hosted through a free Google workspace since the mid 2000’s. Google is now going to start charging per user and it’s not worth it for me.

    The obvious answers to me:

    - keep the domain and use whatever email hosting I can get with the domain hosting and switch everything else to a free gmail account.

    - shut down the domain and just move everything to free gmail.

The second option is the most obvious - the main problem being I’ve had this domain and my personal email for ~15 years. It’s my login for everything and switching is going to be a huge pain.

    Thoughts? Make sense?

Just the fact your email is attached to accounts, I'd setup email forwarding with some hosting provider. I had to do the same awhile back until I slowly switched over all the accounts I cared about to a new email

I've paid for my Google account for the past decade. It's far too important to me to use a free service with no support. The only thing that sucks about paying for it is you can't use a lot of the Google family features and stuff like that but you already know that if you're using a legacy gsuite acct.

I don’t even know what the features are that I’d be missing out on.

The thought of switching to a new email address at this point given how embedded its use is for everything makes me puke a little.

Yeah that would suck. Those features won't matter to you. I'm guessing you keep your family in the Apple jail ...

So you're saying you pay for extra features that I get from Apple for free?

No I'm saying your family is in Apple's walled garden so you wouldn't benefit using the Google family offerings.

On top of that, the Google family stuff is free. I'm saying you don't get it if you pay for a Google account because they don't offer that stuff to their 'business' customers.

Apple users freak out if you ever say anything bad about Apple.. all I said was he has his family in the Apple jail... which is true.. and jail breaking is a term used to describe getting access to your Apple device outside of Apple's control so it's not like I wasn't using a common term. I even came into this thread shit talking Google lol

Bootsies definition of “freak out” is pretty low.

Anyway - I’ve been doing as much reading online as I can to try and find a solution - it’s mostly general grumbling at Google and people more embedded in the Google ecosystem being upset. There are tools to migrate email but if you’re embedded with the play store, it can be a real mess with users in a “pay up for workspaces” or losing years of purchases.

I fall into the miffed but realistic crowd - I always felt I was getting away with something on this one, especially when Google got rid of the ability to sign up for this for free. I’ll take it as a blessing in disguise to get rid of it - as a non-sysadmin-IT person, every time something in the chain of how this was all set up to begin with changed, I had to spend hours/days re-learning how I’d set it up.

Good thing I renewed the domain for another 10 years a couple weeks ago!
