The only way for them to even think about surviving is to file for bankruptcy, get themselves out of their ridiculous union contracts and pension obligations, and restructure and downsize signifigantly

They received so much money from government it is ridiculus. But the situation is a catch 22. There are some town in US (and Canada) where nearly everyone is employed by GM. If they go under there is going to be a serious drop in spending from consumers. Also it will undermind the positive attatude ppl currently have due to Obama taking office. I am sure Obama is going to give all the help he can.

If GM were to go under what would happen to warranties? Would i still have to pay for my vehicle because if i get no warranty.. i ain't paying...

lol, not paying for your vehicle is definitely a great idea.

I would assume there would still be certified shops or dealers that would have to continue to honor the warranties.

GM is not just going to disappear. I would imagine it would be broken in to pieces and sold off. Whoever buys one line would take over responsibility for its current financial arrangements/warranties.

Do you even realize the amount of people employed directly and indirectly by GM in North America? Or even perhaps the amount of spin off jobs created in other industries? Everyone will suffer if they go down.

If there is some sort of major restructuring that goes on it is one thing. But the corporation flat dying would be catastrophic.

Bankruptcy is the best thing for them. It'll allow them to restructure and reorganize which is what they need... throwing money at them just prolongs them declaring bankruptcy.

I realize it but giving them money when they have cause their own problems is fucking crazy. Spend the gazillions of dollars they want for free on other things to help the people that are out of work. Its their own fault. They pay thier employees three times what they are worth and have been building unreliable, shitty resale junk for too long. Give their plants to automakers who know how to run shit, keep the employees and pay them a rate thats not insane, kill the unions, fuck I dont know, but bailing them out is retarded.

Soooo... all of the companies out there that are INDEPENDENT SUPPLIERS to GM deserve the same fate? And all of THOSE employees?

    Good thing you're no economist...

Oh cool, just like that right? Kill the unions. So the CEO can waltz into work tomorrow and be all "Oh hay union workers, um, you cost lot of money, lol so we might just let you go, ttyl" I mean theres not a metric shit ton of paper work and contracts involved so thats ok.

    @ Volkswagon Rabbit

Sorry, I think VW is the devil and would rather keep my Chev and Ford. :p

The domestic automakers need to survive, if they have to go bankrupt to do it so be it, but they must live on.

Dude I am just saying that they pay their employees way too much money, Im all for making huge amounts of cash but paying them what they do has been part of why they are in financial ruin thats all. The unions wont let them take a pay cut so I guess they would rather be out on the street. They need to learn from other automakers that don't have this problem.

You dont think they dont know that? GM hasnt always been in this mess, they could sustain the high wages they paid because sales were off the hook. Now, not so much. Keep in mind this has only been coming down the pipeline for less than a year, thats how quick it can happen. They're cutting back where they can, but unless they declare bankruptcy to get out from under the union, theyre done.

Agreed, but I`ve got a pretty good feeling that if GM/domestics suddenly stopped being made, and people were forced to buy well-made, more reliable cars, your sales are going to slip.

You're smrt. You should write a letter to the president/prime minister.
