Ugh. So I have to give a quote for a CD. I don't sell CDs as a rule, so I have no idea. Is it reasonable to quote a price based on this formula: # files multiplied by the cost of an 8x10 image? I don't want to be losing my shirt on this, and my understanding is that most people will sell the digital files att he same cost they could expect to receive from an average print sale?
print sales are a pain in the ass if you ask me... if i can someway get their money w/o having to do insane amounts of retouching, cropping, retouching, etc., i am all for it!
Ok....sent a quote. I also included that I could not guarantee the quality of the images printed from any lab other than mine, and that I maintained full copyright as per the original contract. We'll see. This is the same family that asked where the "rest" were.
So... when somebody orders a print from your session, you don't do any additional tweaks to it at all to make it perfect?
depending on your workflow...... i worked with a incredibly successful photographer who only showed basic lightroom adjustments in his client meetings; and he has and continues to make sales that would make everyone in this forum cry. So.... retouching does apply to print sales depending on how you approach it and how it works for you. It's not gospel dude
i never said it was. not a pissing contest over workflow why are you so preachy? and not to offend, i could give a fuck about your 'incredibly successful' photographers sales that would make 'everyone in this forum cry'. how can you even assume something like that anyway? you don't know 'everyone in this forum' 's business or incomes....I guess since we all don't go around the forum talking about how much money we all make we're not good, eh?
Yeah... different models of operating I suppose! I process all my images in Lightroom to get 'em as close as possible to what a 'final' image might look like, and show them that. When they place orders, I go into each image and do even more selective edits, skin enhancements, etc. For me, this saves me time retouching every single image opposed to only the ones they order.... am I taking hit on possible sales? Maybe...and most likely? But I recoop this in other ways. As well, time not processing every single file saves me time to play with my son, which is worth more to me anyway
This is something very good to mention. Rhonda's parents were trying at a few places to print of some pictures I had taken of Mia and they all came out looking TERRIBLE. It just makes me appreciate my lab a little more.
Not only that, but they're going to be getting 3:2 images......imagine how they're going to feel when they order a bunch of 8x10s and the heads/arms are cut off.
Been there, done that... Only show finished images and only sell prints. Except for the odd wedding that I do, which includes print sized images retouched, colour corrected and cropped for 8x10... Which is another reason, I don't like doing a lot of weddings!
Sorry, but when they get the original files, the size of the image they choose to print is no longer your problem nor concern.
I've never had much luck with print sales. I give the option of prints or a CD with the photos web and print size. I use pretty much the same formula as you did Tanya except with my weddings.
Yeah. I returned it. If you want to know "who that asshole is" and whether or not "he has a site", ask him.
1) Who the hell is Ratchford? 2) No one said you weren't successful....or that what you do doesn't "rock"
"Ron Burgundy: Boy, that escalated quickly... I mean, that really got out of hand fast. Champ Kind: It jumped up a notch. Ron Burgundy: It did, didn't it? " and so fourth... not really sure where all that fury came from, however, there is more than one right way to do it - just choose the business model and workflow that works best for you. To add to the original question - like others I haven't had much success with print sales, I've found the majority of clients are really wanting the digital files so that they care share them through various media, and print as they see fit. I've taken that into consideration when putting my pricing together. I'm priced as such that I will be making a nice profit from the shooting / disc sale that prints would just be the icing on top. I'm sure I'm leaving some money on the table, but at the same time I don't want the hassle of dealing with print sales and the back and fourth with clients. If this were my 9-5 that might be a different story. I only provide completely finished files to a standard, and print sizes and aspect ratios are no longer my problem. I'd say you're on the right track with your calculation Tanya - figure out what the value would be in terms of prints sales and then charge that for the disc.
Oh boy! hahaha.... I have the same experience as you do Dorman. If I had a full time store front studio, I sure as hell would be fixing every single photo before anyone saw 'em; but since I do this on the side, I don't take it that far. But there is definite benefits to either way!
Yeah man - my business model is to make some supplemental income (at a good profit margin) and not to spend ages in front of the pc (though I always seem to invest far too much time into processing, perfectionist I guess.haha). I already work 40+ hours a week at my 9-5, I don't want to deal with print sales racket. Needed to edit as I realized I was agreeing with something I don't agree about - I'm all for presenting final files to the customer, no half processed proofs from me. What I'm not into is the time and effort of print sales.
ohhhhhhh it sure is hard to bite my fucking tongue on this one. but...keeping with my idea of trying to steer clear of drama on here, i will.
Let 'er rip, I've already made my friends on here, let the drama unfold. ps. let's go shoot some shit.
dude it was totally not directed at you. you're my boy. people talking shit however behind my back is not cool. i'm glad it went to a friend who set them straight rather than someone else. i lost one of the best friends i've had in YEARS on here because of misunderstandings via postings and pm's . it's not happening again.
I know it wasn't directed at me, I'm just stirring the pot... I know exactly what you're talking about, and yeah, not something we want going on here. Though the PM to Tanya speaks volumes about the sender...
