we were watching first 48 and got started into the debate of whether or not it's legitimate. tv is entertainment and it wouldn't be the first time a show lied about it's real life take on things. Skepticism is my default stance so I was wondering if anyone else had the same question and looked into it at all.
So what do you think? Are these kinds of shows just another example of trashy entertainment or is it legitimate settings and scenes?

Man vs. Wild has a camera crew. That's fake in my eyes.

First 48 and Cops are more of documentary style show than reality. I don't see any need for them to be fake or made up?

As for Survivor Man and those other survival shows, I'm sure there is a certain level of "production" to them. I'm also sure they packing GPS and other emergency gear as well.

Ray Mears is sweet because there is no intention of him surviving on his own etc. He clearly has a camera crew, he just studies how people have survived in certain situations and does demonstrations of the techniques and resources they used to do so.

What would make the first 48 fake? It's not like there are car chases and explosions all the time, the majority of the time it's pretty simple storyline. Same for Rookies.

From what I've heard about Survivorman, he goes out and talks to the locals of those areas before he gets dropped off to learn about what he can eat, how to prepare it, etc etc.

We love First 48, Paranormal State and Intervention on A&E. I believe they are real.

I love survivorman but the only thing i wonder about is:
    1. how do his batteries stay charged for 7 days
    2. how does he get his wide shots (does he set up the camera then come back for it? that would be a great waste of much needed energy)

    Lots of spares.

    And he does.

Sometimes, you'll see him in a regular shot walking ~.5km away to get a good wide shot.

    Apparently Cops is real.

One of our consultants was telling us that they advertise in the city when Cops is in town filming.

    tv is a circus.
I took TV arts in college and you can make people think anything is real.

there are some "real" shows out there but for the most part it's just a circus.

my grade 11 english teacher told me that his daughter (who went to Acadia) wrote in to the Dr. Phil show and got accepted. I forget the whole story of the problems they faced but the whole show was scripted. The teens made up the whole story to try to get on the show and they did!!! They were told what to talk about, how to act, etc. They were told it was for the "better" of the show.

while looking for an article on the Dr. Phil story here in halifax, I came across this quote.

"American children and adolescents spend 22 to 28 hours per week viewing television, more than any other activity except sleeping. By the age of 70 they will have spent 7 to 10 years of their lives watching TV."

    :werd:

How do you people think the guys that climb Everest and are on the mountain for 6 weeks at a time get power to their phones/faxes/computers/etc

Last night dude was in the Rockies, and they had his crew set up a camp 20kms away since he was in a heavily bear travelled spot, so they flew over him a few times a day in a chopper to make sure he wasn't dead.

Also, I'm willing to bet Les carries a sat phone, like 500mls of water and a couple energy bars in case of an absolutely emergency.

    You'd be retarded not too.
