"Hundreds of Edmontonians were forced to flee their homes after fire ripped through a southside condo project yesterday, spreading to neighbouring townhouses and causing an estimated $20-$25 million in damage. Fire officials said it was the largest residential blaze in the city in nearly three decades.
It broke out in the 149-unit condo complex under construction at 119 Street SW and MacEwan Road before 5 a.m., officials said."

We just got back from seeing this.. Wow. Took a few pics:

Saw it on the news, looked massive!
Crazy how the houses across the street have their siding melted.

    Having insurance is one thing..

But all the pictures, the saved tickets from old concerts, the home movies, the blanket you've had since you were little.. I couldn't imagine loosing all of that.

Thats the one shitty thing about those cookie cutter type neighborhoods. Everything is so close together.

We were out and took a ton of pics today too, it was unbelievable the destruction. I can't imagine all those young families trying to find a place to live now. This douchbag from the Sun comes up to me, introduces himself and ask's if i lived in one of the damaged houses, i said no, to which he replied, "Oh, that's too bad, i wanted an interview."

I like the last pic too!

It really makes me want to kick myself in the ass to go get a fire and water proof box to put memento's in.

That's crazy. So the fire started on a construction site, but then moved to occupied houses?

I was in Calgary and got text messages about a huge fire in the South end. Figured the guys finally managed to set fire to the place...

    Crazy damage though...

There was a similar fire near Jones Lake in Moncton in the late-eighties when a framed-in 4 or 5 story apartment building caught fire and the radiant heat caused homes on all 3 sides to burst into flames. If I recall correctly they lost around a dozen homes plus the apartment building.

Currently, a house fire is burning out of control in Calgary. One house started it, and it already spread to 2 more houses. :(

jesus, I wonder what the fire department situation is like up there, I mean with the urban sprawl at the rate it's going they must have to build a new department every week or so.
