Okay smarty pants fitness people. I have some questions! Which is better in your opinion for a full body work out and why? I personally am enjoying my elliptical way more than I ever have my treadmill! Also, my elliptical measures in kilojoules and not calories... but with an online calculator it appears as though in 25 mins on a certain program I have burnt 1000 calories... could that be possible in 25 mins? Ohhh also there are 3 different types of programs on my machine - stress/destress; interval and load... are any of you able to tell me which will burn more fat? I'm soooooo dumb when it comes to this stuff! Thanks
I'm enjoying the ellipitcal a lot more too! I find the treadmill to be boring. With my experience I get a better workout with the ellipitcal, but everyones different!
I like the elliptical better as well. If for no other reason then the lack of impact on my knees. Plus I walk a lot during the day. It's nice to do something a little different.
I agree that running/sprinting wouldn't be as enjoyable on the elliptical. I tend to go at a quick jog pace or a slower pace with higher resitance.
treadmills and eleptical machines are designed for different types of workout. Looking from a calorie burning perspective I would say the calculation you are doing is wrong. I do eleptical machines for 20-25 minutes with very high levels and only burn about 600 calories. Eleptical machines will give you fuller motion with less impact on your joints. Treadmills will increase your heart rate at a much faster rate. So if you have the time in the gym you can use the eleptical machines. If you need to get your blood pumping quickly you should do the treadmill.
I've been using this online calculator - http://www.freedieting.com/calories_nutrition.htm Yesterday my machine showed I burnt 3011 kilojoules which by the online calculator was 720 - others have been higher kilojoules burnt I just specifically remember yesterday being so fresh I'm going at a jogging pace and sometimes running and I have the resistance set fairly high.
Like what Duke mentioned going full out on a elliptical will burn about 1000-1300/hour depending on your resistance.
1000 in 30 mins seems quite high, but then again I am simply basing it on what the majority of elliptical machines say when working out.
Umm don't get me wrong but I would say there is something wrong with that machine. Or I am a whimp on the eleptical..
Word. 1000 calories in an hour would still be a fucking hard workout. In a half hour? Is that even possible?
I am thinking that 10kilometers in 30mins is Fucking fast. like if you could really run that then you should be running races and making good coin...haha I think your machine needs calibration, it might be different but at 20kms/hour and 2000 caleroies is WAY WAY too high, I've done mtn bike races for 3 hours at a avg HR of 170 and only hit 2500Calories. The eliptical is a better workout then a tread mill for teh simple reason of low impact full body engagement if you use the hand holds too. you can also switch it up and work different areas easily.
Somethign is wrong with your machine I tell you!!! I ran like hell for like 2 minutes just to see what it would say after seeing the crazy amount of calories you are burning. I swear I would have to run for 24 hours to burn that many.
I went as hard as I could on the elliptical just to see how high I could get the calorie/hour at and it hit like 1,400 once I was fucking given'r for like 20 seconds, Lance Armstrong couldn't keep that pace for an hour.
Wtf mine is totally faaaaaaaaaaaaaacked then. I went so fast I couldn't see my legs and it only said like 1.2 or something.
It would be weird, but maybe it is set to x1000? I dunno but you sure as hell burn more than 1.2 calories an hour.
Oh ok, some machines have the readout for calories/hour and calories. If you are going hard a machine, like really hard, you will burn 1 calorie after about 3 seconds. If you went for a minute you would generally be in the 15-20 range.
next thing you know you'll be eating 4000 calories thinking you're burning 5000 a day and gaining weight like a sumo wrestler... then you'll be wtfing.
Treadmill FTW... I don't really care what the calories counter sais. I do know that after 20 minutes on the treadmill I feel exhausted.. and 20 minutes on eliptical...I just feel weird and a little gay
