I feel like people are not taking this serious enough. Shit is bad, and it is going to get much worse here

The folks not taking it seriously enough in the US are typically Trump supporters. He’s still sending out a message that it’s “just a flu” and not to over react.

On the flip side, good luck buying toilet paper.

I made the mistake of engaging with a co-worker on Facebook when he posted some advice from Fox News about “not over-reacting” and made several comments that the only people who should have to engage in social isolation are those “at risk”.

It’s a big mistake because I hired this guy and he reports to me. Need to delete Facebook.

No? I find the opposite. Everyone seems to be hyper aware of it. I know lots of people who've cancelled travel plans because of it.

wait until the ask to self-quarantine comes in. That is when I’ve seen people start calling all the precautions stupid and over the top.

Seattle just banned public gatherings of over 250 people and the public schools are now closed for at least 2 weeks.

Going to be super interesting to see how this goes over the next two weeks or so. China has plateaued and is declining and there are reports South Korea is as well. Hopefully North America is ahead of it and we see that sooner than later. Doesn't help that dopey Trump is contradicting what everyone with any kind of brain is saying.

There is no way theyre ahead of it. Trump is downplaying it and says a whole lot of nothing in pressers. They dont have enough test kitst, and ERs are turning away symptomatic people with no way to test. Its spread, there are more than likely tens of thousands of undiagnosed cases.

The next 2 weeks are going to be BAD in the US.

There's so much sensationalized "news" stories out there I'm not believing anything until I see it. Hoping for the best.

I hope you're correct. We have 19 confirmed cases in Alberta now. 7 on Monday. That's closer to tripling in 2 days than I'm comfortable with.

So then, sounds like quarantining huge sections of the country as a precaution is working, people need to relax when other places do the same.

Quarantine helps but public education is the most important thing. There shouldn't be any need to mass quarantine if people are being smart and listening to the experts.

They should be freaked out to some extent. Hell, I am freaked out, first case in NB yesterday...

Am I concerned that getting it would kill me?...no
Am I concerned I could contract it without knowing and passing it to my parents with underlying conditions and ultimately resulting in their death?...yes

The spread of this disease is very serious and the more people freaked out about it, the more chance they will be hyper-aware of the potential effects of getting it, or passing it to other people...the better.

I do agree social media and to some extent news is sensationalizing it to some extent, but I would rather that right now than underplay it. Everybody who thinks they are fine and healthy and aren't at risk, how about thinking about the people around you, and then people around them, and so on...it's the spread that's ultra dangerous. I might take every precaution and still randomly bump into one fuck nuts who thinks he's invincible with no visual symptoms, catch it, and before I even know it have spread it to my friends and family, who have then passed it on to theirs, and so forth. One fucking idiot could be responsible for killing a dozen people just that easy.

So it's scary...and if people are scared, that's good...they will be ultra aware of people who may have traveled, are sick, or of themselves if they get symptoms. It won't stop every person to person transmission but it may stop a lot.

I saw that NB case. They say it's presumptive.. I wish they'd clarify exactly how sure they are. Hopefully they presume wrong :o

Oversensationalizing this could be more dangerous than the virus itself. It could send the economy into a free fall and the cascading effects from that could be even worse. We won't be able to deal with the virus effectively if everything is destabilized. They should shut down social media for a month and declare some official channels as the source of information people should be following in regards to the pandemic. Make the cable news networks/radio stations broadcast the official news and cut out all the nonsense. Then when we work through this people will realize that social media does more harm than good and leave it all shut down lol

The ignorance of most people is staggering. Was just looking at a Facebook post in a group I’m part of for parents from around the world. Someone posted asking what people were doing for spring break that’s coming up.

“with all the cheap flights, we just booked a trip!”
“Well, we’re being start and staying home and bought tickets to go to the local water park.”
“We’re healthy so we haven’t given up our plans to visit the kids’ grandparents.”

Meanwhile in Italy, doctors are having to use wartime measures to decide who lives and who dies at hospitals.

“Flatten the curve” should be posted on every billboard in every city of the world.

All he did with his little speech last night is make people panic even more. Total void in leadership.

I'm sure those who voted for him are walking around their offices this morning talking about how smart it was to ban travel from Europe. The stupidity of the general public should not be ignored.

Can get tested here at one of 11 testing centers and have results back within 48h. Pretty sad state of affairs in the US.

And do what with travellers that are coming home? Where are they supposed to go? Hotels aren't free, countries don't want them longer that they declared their stay and many have loved ones that they need to return home to.

Doctors are making choices now on who lives and dies. Your argument seems trivial
