I have an HP laptop dv9000. Everything was just fine, I shut it down properly and left it. The next time i started it up, it hangs at a black screen with just a mouse curser. ctrl-alt-del does nothing. I've ran the start-up repair, and rebooted pressing F8 and tried the last known good configuration, safe mode, and all kinds of other configurations, but it still hangs at a black screen with a mouse curser. Normally I wouldn't hesitate to format and reinstall Vista, however, there are some newer files on there that I absolutely cannot lose, and are newer then my most recent backup.

Also, I discovered my computer hasn't been making restore points.

I've tried a couple of different live cd's, I was able to use the temp OS's, and see all my files, however, They wouldn't allow me to copy the files to my back-up drive.

Is there anything I can do to fix this, or at least get my files?

    Thanks,

I thought that was the problem at first, but It seems to be working when I use the live cd operating system. I think it's just the OS that won't let me copy files... i dunno.. its frustrating.
