Who has made it? What do I need to know about throwing my recipe in the slow cooker for the day? Do I need to cook the hamburger up before I place it in it? Can I put everything in at once, including the onion and peppers? Thanks.
I make it every now and then. I cook the meat in taco seasoning first and then add just it and the beans and seasoning and a can of beer. I add the peppers and other veggies ~2hrs before it is done because I like them to still be a bit crunchy.
Good to know guys. Could I cook up the hamburger tonight and then throw it in tomorrow morning with everything else? Would it still taste okay, even though it was a day old?
With mine I brown the beef, bulk italian sausage and onions (and other veggies like green pepper, celery etc) -- sometimes the night before -- before putting them in the slow cooker. Then add all of my beans and tomatoes/tomato sauces/spices. Put on low for 8 hours.
I use: 1 teaspoon sugar 1 ½ tsp cumin 2 tsp chili powder 1 teaspoon dried oregano Salt and pepper to taste This way you can sorta control the sodium in it. Some spice mixes are loaded with salt.
The alcohol all evaporates out obviously and you get a bit of a yeasty taste to the chilie. Is delicious.

(I don't eat red meat so I can't vouch for it ) I put everything in at once too. 3 LBS MEDIUM HAMBURGER 1/4 CUP COOKING OIL 2 CUPS CHOPPED GREEN PEPPER (CHUNCKY DON'T DICE) 3 INDIVIDUAL CLOVES GARLIC (WHOLE DON'T CHOP) 1 TBSP SALT 1 TBSP CURRY POWDER 1 TBSP CHILI POWDER 1 TSP MUSTRARD (DRY) 5-6 DROPS tABASCO SAUCE 1 TBSP WORCESTERSHIRE SAUCE 1/2 TSP BLACK PEPPER 2 ONIONS, CHOPPED /PUREE IF U DONT LIKE CHUNKS 1 TSP MEAT TENDERIZER (OPTIONAL) 1 13 OZ CAN TOMATO PASTE (HEINZ) 2&1/2 CUPS WATER ADD 3-14 OZ TINS OF KIDNEY BEANS DON'T ADD THE JUICE JUST THE BEANS (LIGHTER COLORED ONES OR DEEP RED). REMOVE THE GARLIC CLOVES BEFORE SERVING. (When I do it in the slow cooker I dont use Tomato Paste and water I use Tomato sauce instead...)
I have a batch in the slow cooker today. 1 lb lean ground beef 1 lb Italian sausage (removed from casings) 2 chopped onions 1/2 chopped green pepper 1 - 2 stalks celery chopped Fry together these beef, sausage, onion, green pepper and celery in a pan, crumbing up into pieces as if it were all ground beef. Put in the bottom of the slow cooker. Add: 1 28oz can diced stewed tomatoes 2 15oz can tomato sauce 2 cans baked beans with tomato sauce 1 can kidney beans, drained and rinsed 1 teaspoon sugar 1 ½ tsp cumin 2 tsp chili powder 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1 - 2 cloves garlic Stir together and cook on low for 8 hours.
