Collision on N.S. highway kills 1 One person was killed in a head-on collision on Highway 103 Tuesday morning. Click here for full article.
I've driven the 103 a million times from Halifax to Italy Cross... I agree that driver incompetence is often to blame BUT some parts of that road are down right dangerous... If you're unfamiliar with those parts, watch out... It could happen to anybody.
I use to drive the road from Halifax to Shelburne twice a week for 4 years while I was in college. I have never seen so many idiotic drivers anywhere, ever. The passing lanes are useless, because there will be one moron driving 80, and as soon as they hit the passing lane they'll speed up to 140. Either that, or you'll get some asshole in the passing lane drive the same speed as the car they are passing, then duck in at the last second, not giving anyone else a chance to pass. I've seen some pretty sketchy moves on that highway, and luckily enough now, I have a car with enough power, that when I need to pass I can get it done quickly.
I suppose anyone unfamiliar to it could be a little intimidated, but roads don't kill people, drivers do, and as long as there are people on the roads not paying attention, passing where they shouldn't be, or drinking and driving this will continue to happen. Twinning will definitely stop the head on collisions there but people willl only drive faster because they can.
Driving too fast on that road I don't think is the problem. I believe driving too slow causes more accidents than anything, but I agree, the road is fine, it's the drivers who are idiots. And yes, RIP
I have had to swerve a couple times onto the shoulder of the road because of some dumb fuck passing into oncoming traffic (me). Luckily I reacted well and nobody was killed.
Driver error is the main cause for traffic accidents. While speeding isn't the dominant cause, it greatly increases the damage done in an accident. Saying slower moving vehicles cause more accidents would be slightly ignorant, the only times a slow moving vehicle cause problems are to the speeding drivers or when another driver makes a stupid mistake in trying to overtake the slower driver. I bet anytime you have a slow moving vehicle, replacing it with slow moving police car and there would be less accidents.
Bottom line is, it should be illegal to hold up traffic. All it does is frustrate drivers behind you and make them do shit they wouldn't normally do. Not to mention, when I'm forced by some old fucker to drive 80 in a 100 zone, I almost start falling asleep, whereas at a normal rate of speed, I'm more attentive. Slow drivers FTL.
so the guy driving 80 should be punished? I agree it pisses me off as well, but 100 is the limit...not the minimum! Chill and wait for the right time to overtake... everyone wins.
There is, it's just not posted. Anything under 70 has to have hazard lights, and if the police get a call from someone going 50 on the highway, they get a ticket just as a speeder does....
Although this is sad, I hate how everyone blames the road and the government. I've taken both those highways numerous times to Yarmouth, and was never afraid for my life because of the road.
There are always going to be shitty drivers. Separate two shitty drivers moving at 100km/h by two yellow lines and 3', they're bound to bump into eachother and someone could be killed. Separate the same two shitty drivers by a grass median, they'll be less inclined to kill each other..
Yes, but head-ons, the real killers, are virtually eliminated. If given the choice, I'd rather the shitty driver rear end me, or bump my side.... Rather than come through my windshield.
The driver of the truck dates a friend of ours. A really nice girl - everyone is thankful she survived. That highway is brutal. There are too few double passing lanes, people drive like idiots too.
