It appears Carfax is kind of useless - did you see the W5 documentary about it? If you're using it, remember not everything may appear on it - some accidents and other information may take years to appear.
I just came here to post this. I think I watched that same documentary. Was that the one where the young guy bought the white X-Terra that ended up having frame damage? I guess their competitor databases were more reliable. The executive they interviewed from Carfax was a real toolbag.
That's the one. I wish I knew what competitors they got the right information from, because they seemed really good. Nothing is a substitute for really checking out the car and getting it up on a lift. Even though I really know what I'm doing around cars (turbo engine swap done in the garage at home ftw) I still paid a friendly mechanic $50 to take a look at the car I eventually bought first.
Aw I will be doing that for sure. Car will go to the Mercedes dealer and get checked out. I told the people that I will pay for the check up. Should I take it to the dealer or somewhere else. Car has new safety inspection (which doesn't mean much)
You're right, the safety doesn't mean shit. Unless you have someone that you know and trust at the dealership, I wouldn't go there. Remember bodywork expensive, engine work (by comparison) cheap!
Carfax is useless, we took in a Civic, carfax came back clean, Carproof showed it was a rebuild title.
Hey I thanks for that. I will PM you the VIN tomorrow when the owner emails it to me. I forgot to write it down today.
Carfax is good for general assments, but don't rely on Carfax soley to see if the car is clean or not.
Ok, I talked to Mercedes dealership and the inspection will be around $250 so I am now looking for mechanics I can trust to take a look at the car? Anyone who can refer me to an honest mechanic?
I need a car proof done ASAP. If someone can have one done PLEASE message me and I'll supply the VIN. Sorry for the thread jack, I just figured a new thread wasn't necessary.
