I was not expecting to hear this name again in the news: https://atlantic.ctvnews.ca/as-alla...community-recalls-a-reign-of-terror-1.5262171
Wow - guess it shows what a few years make but this was all over the news like crazy when I was in junior high. Terrifying at the time. People were afraid to go outside in NB.
I'll have to checkout that podcast. Memory is definitely rusty on this case. I remember the name though.
Is the podcast actually just called Nighttime? I’ll look it up. I have a ton of memories of this guys from junior high - would be interesting to hear what happened and see how it matches with my memories. I think partly we were camping in Kouchibouguac at one point when he was on the loose and I remember my parents glued to the radio for updates as he was last seen in that area.
I remember it but it had slipped my mind until now, I am going to age myself here but I was a teen when all this went down. My Wife will love that podcast she loves the Canadian crime podcasts. I am not yet sure if she is planning something but I will still send her this one like the big dumb loveable bastard that I am.
Listened to this podcast today as well a more recent one where the host reads a letter he got in a Christmas card from Legere. Thanks again, 17, for the link. It was interesting to listen to - the biggest thing I remember from when I was a kid was when he mentioned Legere stealing a car in Truro. That was *huge* news for a town like Truro at the time and I remember a buddy of mine who’s dad was in the RCMP telling stories of him getting involved in the case. If the rest of the podcast is just as good, I’ll be really happy - always find these kind of stories fascinating and the Canadian tilt is awesome.
And... parole denied: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/allan-legere-monster-of-the-miramichi-parole-1.5871123
No problem, his podcasts are really good. I'm constantly on the road so I eat podcasts up like crazy but i'm really picky. His stuff is always in my rotation, he puts a lot of research into them and its well done.
I heard last night that he didn't really expect to get parole, but rather this was an effort to get moved from max to medium security.
I’m not on the road a lot but also really picky when it comes to podcasts. Content is always important but things like high production value and the host knowing what they’re doing help a lot and this guy seems to have that.
If you listen to the Christmas letter episode 17 mentioned above - he has taken a bunch of law classes over the year and thinks he is smarter than most everyone else and can’t understand why he’s still locked up (I might be mixing that last let up with the news article - the Christmas letter episode is basically just the host reading a letter from Legere and it is pretty rambling in what it covers).
The other thing mentioned in the podcast that is forgotten about were “Legere lights” - backyard lights that turn on automatically that had a distinctive yellow-ish glow. They were definitely a fixture in NB for a long time - and even in NS.
In May of ‘89 I would have been 3. So I would think by the time I would be old enough to remember / comprehend it, the news had probably quieted down. Then it would have probably been too fresh to learn about in school.
Interesting facts: His was the first trial in Canada to rely on DNA evidence. His defence was that it was faulty because of all the inbreeding in the Miramachi area.
