how wide of a tire can I fit on my 14 x 6 steelies??? Will a 225/60/14 fit? Will they rub on a civic that is lowered 2"? what do the experts say???
A 225 will never fit on a 6" wide rim. 205 is the biggest you should even consider trying to squeeze on that rim.
Yep, a 205 is even a tight fit on a 6" rim (but I had them on my 15x6 SiR rims) The 18x8 wheels on my current car wear 225s...
The OEM Steels on my 93 Si were 14x5.5 and they're currently wearing 205/40/14 R-compounds but I wouldn't want to do that with a street tire. I've got 215 R-compounds on a set of 13x5.5 rims... they're... interesting looking. Wouldn't have to worry about curbing the rims!
Yeah..... I have SiR's (thanks Gord!) and Si steelies...... I need winter tires for the steelies. I think the 215's are out of the question....
How were the SiR's with the 205's? what was the treadwear like? I need tires for the spring for those too. I was thinking a 195/50/15.
You do realize that for winter tires you want the narrowest tire you can fit on the rim, not the widest, right? I ran 185s on the SiR on 14" steelies come winter. You want a narrow tire to cut through the snow, as well as to maximize the weight on each square inch of rubber to max traction on ice.
What he said above: 205/50/15 is a perfect fit on SiR rims. Not sure how it effects treadware though, so don't understand that question. Mind you, treadwear was usually my last concern (I ran T1-Ss as my everyday tire) so I'm not the best person to get into that.
I had 195/50/15s on those SiRs before I switched to the Heliums. They were fine. Very minimal (.03%) speedo shift. Minimized (Well, as much as possible without dropping) the wheel gap. You'd have absolutely no worry about rubbing with them on a 2" drop I suspect. http://pics.spoon.org/Cars/ASCC-SoloII-06-15-2003/IMG_1850.jpg Damn I like those rims. Give 'em back! Now the drop I've got going on now... thats a different story.
Screw cuttin through the snow...... If I'm gonna drive that civic, with a 2" drop and a SiR front clip that it about a pop can off of the ground, I need meat.
I was thinkin contact surface of the tire, being so wide..... I was thinking of the small camber issue that I forgot to make note of.....
I had 215's on my truck rims that were 14x6.5. I'm still getting the hang of the tire size thing. Don't laugh at me! :razz3:
