They should build the stadium in Lower Sackville and call the team "Rough Riders", because Sack Vegas is easier to get to and having two teams with the same fucking name is a smart thing to do with a league with less than 10 teams.

How's the attendance at the Moosehead's games the last few years?

If it's anything like I've experienced in the past, putting up a building that can house more than twice the number of people OUTSIDE, for a less popular (in Canada) sport, seems like a VERY Nova Scotia thing to do.

You'd be surprised. I doubt they'd be trying to get one if they didn't think it'd work. They are trying to make money.

The downfall won't be the interest, it will be the city trying to capitalize on it .I forsee increased bus fares to the games, premiums for using the bridge during game times, and whatever else they think they can do to fuck things over.

I've been to Al's games, and in a city of 3 million there were plenty of empty seats at times. How is this going to work in a province of less than a million?

Lots of people try lots of things to make money that make no logical sense.

Having lived in two CFL cities (Edmonton/Calgary), in my experience, there's no way that attendance in Halifax will be high enough to support a stadium, without some serious subsidies or other financial support. Half the stadium is empty at most Eskimos/Stampeders games, with populations in the 1,000,000+ range. How many are going to be empty when you've got a population of 400,000?

Population is just one factor. The city has extremely limited sporting event options. I'd imagine most Edmonton/Calgary sports fans are checking out NHL games.

But are folks back home really that into the cfl? I don't remember any of my social groups following it... I do remember hosting or attending Superbowl parties, never remember hearing about a grey cup party.

They should do a season ticket drive to determine viability. They did it here in Seattle for the NHL - you had to be willing to put up $1000 per ticket just for the right to "get in line" for a season ticket. You get the money back if you don't eventually buy the ticket, but you have to give them a chunk of cash for a 1-2 year period until they get the franchise (or not). You need to be able to show a solid base of season ticket sales (both individuals and corporate sponsored) IMO or it is all just speculation, like this thread. (FWIW, they had to shut down the ticket drive in Seattle for the NHL within hours of starting it because they had more people sign up to be "in line" than the stadium would eventually hold.)

Nobody goes in Edmonton because it’s in the north end. Gross.

I kind of see what your saying. There lots of good sports options in Edmonton, nobody wants to go to an Eskimo game.

Citadels, Windjammers, Mooseheads, Rainmen. None ever received much support. I get the lack of support for basketball in Canada, but hockey? I'd expect to see more interest for football than basketball, but only marginally.

I would LOVE to be wrong, and to see this come to Halifax and do really well. I'm pretty confident I'm not wrong though. Let's circle back in eight years and see (three years to get it built, five years for the stands to slowly empty...)

Ottawa has turned it around and have sold out or almost sold out every game since they have been back in the league, They did the lansdowne development right this time around, and I believe the lead for the ottawa team is heading up the Halifax one..

Also if Halifax was smart they would do what Ottawa did, your game ticket is free bus to the game.

There's not a hope in hell that halifax would discount a bus ticket. If anything we'd increase it.

Haven't they made busses free for certain events in the past?

Regardless if you like the idea or not. It would be a pretty great location looking over the harbour.
