Beware of Advantage Movers in Halifax. They appear to be operating under several different names, making holding them accountable difficult, so here I am.

We booked these guys well in advance for 6pm on the first of the month. We gave them a list of ten large items we needed to move about 1km, from one flat to another on the peninsula. They told us the job would take two men about two hours.

Well, 6pm came and went. Some time near 7pm, they called and explained they were running behind and would be another hour. We now expected them at 8pm, which also came and went. I called at 9pm and asked where they were and was told they were "in downtown Halifax" and would be 15 minutes.

9:15pm came and went. We should have been out of the apartment hours earlier now.

After not hearing from them at all since I spoke to them at 9pm, we called them around 11pm to ask if they were ever coming. That's when he said he wasn't the boss, and we should call him. That number went to a voicemail. The guy who wasn't the boss called back and gave us his word he and his men would be by soon.

It was after midnight when the phone rang again. "We'll be fifteen minutes."

Eventually they finally arrived, over six hours late, in the middle of the night. The driver of the van immediately asked if it would be alright if they all went and smoked weed before they started. I assume they decided against that move because the police were parked across the street.

They were quick once they got going, however they ripped a chair open and marked up walls. They must have thought we didn't notice but we were just too tired by now to fight about it.

Our landlord had to remove a futon from the flat we were moving into and asked our movers if they could do it. Turns out they could, right in the middle of our booking.... at like 1:45am.

So, we're super popular in our new building and neighbourhood since our movers woke up the whole block. They even had the nerve to ask a tenant who they'd woken up, who came outside to chew us out for moving in during the middle of the night, for drinks. She shut them down pretty hard.

All in all, it took the movers 90 minutes to complete our move from start to finish, and that includes the work they did during that time for our landlord, who was also billed simultaneously. We were charged for the whole two hours, even though the movers readily admitted they were well under that time... and ~six hours late.

They offered no excuse whatsoever for the delay, and of course there was no discount. Just some half-assed apologies. You could tell the guy was a compulsive liar who didn't care how inconvenienced they'd made us.

We talked to the people who were disturbed by the whole operation, on both ends of the move, and explained "We didn't book 1am movers" and most were pretty understanding. They asked for the company's name and number so they could complain to them in the morning and we provided that information. They also commented that the movers appeared to be, and smelled, intoxicated.

They advertise on Kijiji but claim to be insured. That's what you get for putting any faith in Kijiji.

We've always rented a van and did it ourselves in the past. This time, we thought it would be easier to have someone else look after the heavy stuff. Lesson learned, next time it'll be a reputable company.

TL;DR--- Don't hire movers who advertise on Kijiji. Next time it'll be the Yellow Pages, or by personal reference.

I just picked up this starter kit (I didn't get it from WalMart):
http://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/insteon-...FfFDMgod3DYAPA

and hope to pick up some the Dimable LED bulbs soon... I did a bit of research before pulling the trigger, you can control most x10 devices with this kit as well. There is a few different pieces of software out there that allows you to interface your computer with it as well - pretty powerful stuff actually, though pricey.

Anyone have a hook-up? :brows:
